Minneapolis mayor: Trump wants us to ‘take the bait’ on agitators at protests
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) commended protesters in the city for "not taking the bait" from President Trump and for keeping demonstrations peaceful. "Not only have they not taken the bait, they have pushed others back from the brink, to say, ‘Hey, you know what? This is what Donald Trump wants,`" Frey said. "He wants us to take the bait. He wants those agitators to get a hold of this crowd in a way that it makes them cause harm to others and or damage to property. "To them, I want to say my deepest thanks," Frey continued. "We are so grateful for everything you`ve been doing." Protests erupted in the city following the fatal shooting of a woman by an ICE officer on Wednesday. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O`Hara said authorities arrested 29 people after demonstrators damaged windows and graffitied a Minneapolis hotel, and that one officer was injured after a protester threw a "chunk of ice" at them. O`Hara said local police are continuing to monitor demonstrations in the city, with additional marches and protests planned for this weekend. "We are fully prepared if things cross the line and become unlawful to make additional arrests if necessary," he said. The Minneapolis mayor`s comments follow a stark warning from Attorney General Pam Bondi, who warned protesters on Thursday not to cross a "red line." "MINNESOTA: Peacefully protesting is a sacred American right protected by the First Amendment," Bondi wrote in a post on the social media platform X. "Obstructing, impeding, or attacking federal law enforcement is a federal crime. So is damaging federal property. If you cross that red line, you will be arrested and prosecuted. Do not test our resolve." During his Saturday press conference, the mayor warned that protesters who harmed others or damaged property would be "arrested." However, Frey emphasized that the "vast majority of people have done this right." "We are a safe city," Frey said. "We will not counter Donald Trump`s chaos with our own brand of chaos here. We in Minneapolis are going to do this right."
