Minneapolis Mayor Disputes DHS’s Account Of Fatal ICE Shooting: ‘That Is Bulls**t’
Mayor Jacob Frey slammed federal attempts to spin the fatal shooting and told ICE to “get the f**k out” of the city.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey slammed attempts by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to portray Wednesday`s fatal ICE shooting as an act of self-defense, and demanded agents leave the city, dropping a few expletives along the way. "They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly: That is bullshit," Frey said at a hastily arranged news conference after the fatal shooting. "This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying," he added. "I have a message for ICE," Frey continued. "To ICE: Get the fuck out of Minneapolis." Frey went on to say, "They are not here to cause safety in this city. What they are doing is not to provide safety in America. What they are doing is causing chaos and distrust. They`re ripping families apart, they`re sowing chaos on our streets, and in this case, quite literally killing people." The fiery retort came after a U.S. immigration agent shot a driver in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning.
A video of the incident shared on Bluesky (warning: graphic) appears to show ICE agents approach a burgundy SUV parked perpendicular to the road, impeding their vehicles` path. Masked and unidentified agents exit a gray truck and approach the SUV, telling the driver to "get out of the fucking car," at which point the driver reverses slightly, points the wheels of the SUV away from the officers and proceeds to drive away. Three gunshots ring out and the SUV, which had proceeded down the road unimpeded, then crashes. A second angle of the shooting appears to show an agent firing once into the SUV`s windshield, then into the driver`s-side open window as it passes by. Brandon Hewitt told MS Now he was getting up around 8:30 a.m. when he heard three gunshots and looked outside his window to see that a Honda had crashed. He said he believed the victim was an ICE observer. "I`m pretty right-leaning, but seeing this, this is not what you need to do," he said. "It`s not how to do it. It`s not how we`re supposed to do things around here in America." Venus de Mars, a 65-year-old Minneapolis resident who lives near where the shooting occurred, told Reuters she saw paramedics performing CPR on a woman near the crashed car. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O`Hara told KARE11 the victim was a 37-year-old woman and that "there is nothing to indicate that she was the target of law enforcement activity." DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin claimed earlier that the ICE agent began firing after a "violent rioter" attempted to run over the officer, who "fired defensive shots." McLaughlin also described the driver`s actions as "an act of domestic terrorism."
