The Central Bank of Afghanistan (CBA) on Wednesday announced that as from Nawroz, the bank will no longer accept tatty, torn or defaced banknotes.
 
Members of the public can exchange these notes at any bank, said CBA officials. Banks will in turn give clients new notes.   
 
Based on Article 39 of the Law of the Central Bank, defaced and damaged notes can be exchanged up until Nawroz, which is around March 22, said CBA officials.
 
After that, these notes will no longer be considered valid.  
 
“We will not accept these banknotes from the first of Hamal 1396 (March 22, 2017). These banknotes will be consficated and will not be credible banknotes,” said CBA spokesman Emal Hashor.
 
Meanwhile, a number of residents and money exchangers at Sarayee Shahzada market have asked the Afghan government to speed up the process of collection of damaged banknotes as there are huge numbers of such notes in circulation.
 
“In terms of quality, there is no big difference between our banknotes and banknotes of regional countries, but our citizens are neglecting to protect banknotes and it  damages them,” said deputy head of money exchangers union Hajji Dad Gul.
