Most Americans say ICE has been too tough: Poll
Americans are increasingly likely to say U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tactics have been too tough, according to a poll released Sunday. In the CBS News/YouGov poll conducted late last week, 61 percent of respondents say the way ICE is conducting its operations when it stops or detains people is "too tough," while 15 percent say it`s "not tough enough." Another 24 percent say it`s "about right." That marks a shift from a similar poll released at the start of November, when 53 percent said ICE operations were too tough, and 17 percent said they were not tough enough. The shift comes mostly from Democrats and independents, both of which saw a 9-percentage point increase in the share who say the way ICE has conducted its operations has been too tough - to 94 percent and 68 percent, respectively. Among Republicans, the share who say ICE has been too tough in its conduct ticked up 4 points, to 19 percent, in the latest poll. Similarly, the latest poll shows Americans are increasingly doubting the administration`s claims that it is prioritizing "dangerous criminals" in deporting migrants who are living in the country illegally. Today, 56 percent of people say the Trump administration is prioritizing for deportation "people who aren`t dangerous criminals," up from 52 percent in the November poll. Overall support for Trump`s program to deport immigrants are in the country illegally has dropped, from 52 percent in the November poll to 46 percent now. The poll was conducted a week after an ICE officer shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good during a standoff with protesters in Minneapolis. The Trump administration maintains the officer acted in self-defense and feared for his life, pointing to video footage it says shows Good was using her car to threaten his life. Critics, however, say the footage shows Good was trying to drive away from the officer, not run him over. On Wednesday, the first day of the three-day poll, another ICE officer shot and injured a Venezuelan migrant in Minneapolis after the officer was allegedly attacked when following the target on foot after he fled a traffic stop. The latest survey included 2,523 adults and was conducted Jan. 14-16. The margin of error is 2.3 percentage points.
