Over 22,000 dental patients in England have been recalled for tests to see if they have been infected with HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. The recall, seen as the biggest of its kind in the UK medical history, came amid rising concerns over apparent multiple failures” in infection control by a dentist who treated patients in the Nottingham district. The dentist named as Desmond D'Mello and the practice concerned is the Daybrook Dental Surgery. The dentist treated patients over a 32-year period is said not to have followed proper infection control procedures. According to NHS England, he failed to wash his hands and change gloves between patients. NHS England said the patients will be screened for blood-borne viruses including HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The revelation has raised the alarm over the NHS supervision over cross-infection control standard in dental treatment.
