At least 34 people have died in flash floods caused by heavy rain across Cambodia, triggering evacuations and inundating infrastructure across the country, local media reported on Wednesday, October 21.

At least 240,000 hectares of farmland have been flooded, affecting over 245,000 people across the country, including in the capital of Phnom Penh where thousands have been evacuated, local media reported.

Local broadcaster PNN showed footage of soldiers evacuating villagers from flooded houses on Tuesday, October 20, in northwest Banteay Meanchey Province.

Ongoing flooding has killed dozens across Southeast Asia since early October. The region has suffered particularly heavy rainfall amid the onset of a La Nina weather system, which is characterized by unusually cold temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.
