US film distributor buys Iranian drama ’Yalda, a Night for Forgiveness’

A US-based film distribution company has acquired the rights to Iranian film "Yalda, a Night for Forgiveness" for release in the United States.

Film Movement, a film distribution firm based in New York City, has purchased the right to the Iranian motion picture from Paris-based Pyramide International.

According to the North American distributor of foreign films, the movie will be initially released for the silver screen this fall. Subsequently it would be available online and on DVD for home viewers.

The Iranian film, directed by Masoud Bakhshi, received Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic category in 2020. Also it was presented in the 70th annual Berlin International Film Festival at its European debut and was nominated for Generation 14-plus Crystal Bear.

Film Movement president Michael Rosenberg acclaimed Bakhshi’s work saying he is "an incredibly talented director, and we’re excited to introduce his latest captivating, eye-opening drama to world cinema lovers across the US."

The film tells the story of a young woman named Maryam who accidently kills her husband Nasser. Convicted of murder, the only person who can save her is Nasser’s daughter, Mona.

Hence, Maryam appears on a popular live TV show to beg for forgiveness. But forgiveness proves difficult when the two women are forced to relive the past.
