Pakistani Fighter Jets Conduct Airstrikes in Afghanistan; Taliban Warn of Retaliation
Pakistani fighter jets carried out airstrikes on Saturday night targeting districts in Afghanistan`s (Paktika Province). The Taliban, warning Pakistan, stated that the "aggressive attacks" would not go unanswered. According to AnsarPress, sources reported that Pakistani jets struck the districts of Barmal and Urgun in Paktika Province on Saturday night. The Pakistani military reportedly targeted various areas in Barmal and Urgun, as well as the districts of Khogyani, Behsud, and Ghani Khel in (Nangarhar Province), on the night of February 21 (local time). Among the reported targets, Pakistani fighter jets struck a religious madrasa in Barmal district of Paktika. Simultaneously with the strikes in Paktika, Pakistani aircraft also carried out attacks in the districts of Khogyani, Behsud, and Ghani Khel in Nangarhar Province. In a statement, Pakistan said the airstrikes were conducted against targets inside Afghanistan in response to a recent suicide attack on a mosque in (Islamabad), as well as two other suicide bombings in (Bannu( and (Bajaur). Pakistan`s Ministry of Information claimed that conclusive evidence indicates the attacks were carried out by leadership and commanders based in Afghanistan, including Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and ISIS-Khorasan (ISKP). Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban of harboring terrorist groups, including TTP, on Afghan soil and has emphasized that these groups use Afghan territory to launch attacks against Pakistan. Meanwhile, Akif Muhajir, spokesperson for the Taliban`s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, responded to the airstrikes in a post on X, writing: "The torn Qurans in the Barmal madrasa will certainly not go unanswered. One who cannot secure his own safety should not blame others. They must know that this affair will prove very difficult for them." So far, no details have been released regarding potential casualties or damage resulting from the strikes.
