US President Trump on Monday said the United States and Cuba are talking as the island faces crippling circumstances in the midst of a White House-imposed oil blockade.

"Cuba is right now a failed nation, and they don`t even have jet fuel to get for airplanes to take off. They`re clogging up their runway," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

"We`re talking to Cuba right now, and Marco Rubio talking to Cuba right now, and they should absolutely make a deal, because it`s a humanity it`s really a humanitarian threat," he added.

Multiple airlines have suspended service to Cuba as sanctions on Havana`s oil threaten international travel, medical services and tourism for the country. The country heavily relied on oil transfers from Venezuela, which have now been halted following the capture of regime leader Nicolás Maduro.

The Trump administration is restricting trade with Cuba citing its close ties to Iran, Russia and China as reasons for pause in hopes of toppling the current regime. The White House has threatened to punish any country that directly or indirectly sells or otherwise provides any oil to Cuba.

Last Thursday, Mexico sent two ships with 800 tons of aid to the island and plans to send more in an effort to support people in dire need of resources.

"We have a lot of great Cuban Americans, and they`re going to be very happy when they`re going to be able to go back and say hello to their relatives and do things that they should have been allowed to do for a long time," the president said on Monday.

"I`m very interested in the people that are here that were treated so badly by Castro and the Cuban authorities, they have been treated horribly. So we`ll see how it all turns out. But Cuba and us, we are talking. In the meantime, there`s an embargo. There`s no oil, there`s no money, there`s no anything," he continued.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is a second-generation American of Cuban descent, is currently leading talks with officials in Havana and said that one path forward could be built on economic reforms in a recent interview with Bloomberg.

Trump on Monday stopped short of endorsing a takeover similar to the one in Venezuela, but said if he was considering the measure, "it wouldn`t be a very tough operation, as you could figure. But I don`t think that`ll be necessary."

However, foreign leaders remained scorned by the current oil blockade, halting daily operations for those on the island amid political tensions.

"Under a mendacious and argument-free pretext, peddled by those who engage in politics and enrich themselves at the expense of our people`s suffering, President Trump seeks to strangle the Cuban economy by imposing tariffs on countries that, in exercise of their sovereignty, trade oil with #Cuba..." Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel wrote in a post on the social platform X last month.

"This new measure clearly demonstrates the fascist, criminal, and genocidal nature of a clique that has hijacked the interests of the American people for purely personal ends," he later added.
