Trump connects latest Minneapolis shooting with ‘cover up’ for ‘theft and fraud’ in state
US President Trump defended the presence of federal law enforcement agents in Minnesota following another deadly shooting on Saturday, tying the latest incident to an ongoing massive fraud investigation in the state. A man, who federal officials claim was armed, was shot and killed during a struggle with U.S. Border Patrol agents in south Minneapolis on Saturday morning. Trump shared an image of the pistol allegedly confiscated from the victim in a Truth Social post, writing: "This is the gunman`s gun, loaded (with two additional full magazines!) and ready to go." "What is that all about? Where are the local Police Why weren`t they allowed to protect ICE officers? The Mayor and Governor called them off? It is stated that many of these Police were not allowed to do their job, that ICE had to protect themselves - Not an easy thing to do!" Trump continued. He went on to claim there was a coordinated "cover up" to distract from tens of billions of dollars being stolen from the state, further accusing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) of "inciting Insurrection." "We are there because of massive Monetary Fraud, with Billions of Dollars missing, and Illegal Criminals that were allowed to infiltrate the State through the Democrats` Open Border Policy," Trump wrote. "Much of what you`re witnessing is a COVER UP for this Theft and Fraud. The Mayor and the Governor are inciting Insurrection, with their pompous, dangerous, and arrogant rhetoric! Instead, these sanctimonious political fools should be looking for the Billions of Dollars that has been stolen from the people of Minnesota, and the United States of America," he continued. Both Walz and Frey renewed calls for federal agents to leave Minneapolis after another resident was shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent around 9 a.m. Saturday, just a block away from where Renee Good, 37, was fatally shot in her SUV earlier this month by an ICE officer. "The invasion of these heavily armed, masked agents roaming around on our streets of Minneapolis, emboldened with a sense of impunity, it has to end," Frey said at a press conference. "This is not how it has to be," he added, pleading with Trump to "act like a leader." A DHS official told The Hill`s sister network, NewsNation, that officers were conducting a targeted operation against a "illegal alien wanted for violent assault" when the altercation occurred, alleging an individual had approached two agents with a semi-automatic handgun. The official said the individual "violently resisted" attempts by officers to disarm him, characterizing the circumstances as an "armed struggle." "Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, a Border Patrol agent fired defensive shots," the official said, later adding that the individual had two magazines and no identification. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O`Hara said the victim was shot several times in the chest and later died at the hospital; however, DHS officials claim the man was pronounced dead at the scene. O`Hara said during an afternoon press conference that the victim was a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident who is believed to be a U.S. citizen and licensed gun owner. Shortly after, Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino accused Frey and O`Hara of omitting facts. "[We need] state and local enforcement to help us coordinate to get violent criminals off the streets," Bovino said. "Mayor Frey and Chief O`Hara, just a few minutes ago, did the opposite of that by omitting the fact that the suspect had a gun and magazines full of ammunition," he added, claiming the individual was targeting law enforcement. When pressed by reporters over how the incident unfolded and whether the victim brandished his gun, Bovino said "those facts will come to light" and noted an "evolving" situation. Walz later slammed Bovino for rushing to conclusions before an investigation was completed. "I`m rejecting the rush to judgment within 15 minutes of this, which they did last time. That`s why you need to have a fair investigation," Walz said, accusing Bovino of slandering the victim. "They`ve written the narrative already, and the audacity to critique the police chief of Minneapolis after the work that those heroic officers are trying to do, and to be critiqued by this guy. I mean, I don`t know," the governor added. Saturday`s shooting - the third this month in Minnesota - comes amid weeks of escalating tension and mass protests in the Twin Cities over the expanding presence and tactics of federal law enforcement in the state as part of Trump`s immigration crackdown, Operation Metro Surge.
