Federal agents shot and killed person in Minnesota, officials say
Minneapolis officials said they are investigating.
Federal agents shot and killed a person in Minneapolis, state and local officials said Saturday. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O`Hara said the person who was shot and killed was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry. O`Hara also said traffic tickets are the man`s only prior violations of the law.
"We are working to confirm additional details. We ask the public to remain calm and avoid the immediate area," the city said in a Facebook post. Though the details of what led to the shooting remain unclear, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said that the suspect who was shot had "a firearm with two magazines." A state official confirmed the man had died. Two intersections in South Minneapolis have been blocked from traffic. Dozens of masked federal immigration officers are on the scene, and protesters have started to gather, with some shouting "murderer" and yelling at agents. Officers have let off some tear gas and pepper bombs.
At least one protester was seen on an NBC News video being taken to the ground and placed in handcuffs after agents started to move demonstrators back from the scene. The protester`s face appeared bloodied when agents picked him up. Minneapolis residents said they were frustrated and angry about the continued violence, weeks after Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. "It just really infuriates me because they`re going to try to keep coming and they`re going to keep hurting people and we have to keep on standing up," said Andrew Collier, a Minneapolis resident. "We can`t let them get comfortable with what they`re doing," Collier added. "And that means showing up whenever they do something terrible like this, or anytime they`re in our streets."
Gov. Tim Walz said he spoke to the White House. "Minnesota has had it. This is sickening," he said in a post on X. "The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now."
