The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has called for the immediate release of a Palestinian-American teenager held in an Israeli prison without trial for over eight months.

Mohammed Ibrahim, a 16-year-old US citizen from Florida, was arrested by Israeli occupation forces in February after being accused of throwing rocks at Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.

Ibrahim has informed his lawyers that he confessed to the accusations out of fear after being subjected to beatings and threats of further violence.

According to the US-based rights group, Israeli military prosecutors have threatened to extend Ibrahim`s detention for up to three additional years.

CAIR reports that Ibrahim`s sworn statement details severe mistreatment during his imprisonment, including beatings with rifle butts, prolonged periods without food, and denial of medical care.

In recounting his interrogation, Ibrahim stated, "Israel`s prison authorities threatened that if I did not comply, they would instruct the soldiers to beat me. Out of sheer fear, I ultimately confessed," CAIR reported.

Robert McCaw, CAIR`s government affairs director, condemned the detention and ongoing mistreatment, emphasizing, "For every day that Mohammed Ibrahim is unjustly imprisoned and abused by the Israeli military, we will continue to pressure our elected officials to demand his immediate release."

CAIR`s Florida chapter, CAIR-FL, has also called for urgent US intervention to secure Ibrahim`s immediate release. The group sent an email to members of Congress that included Ibrahim`s sworn statement documenting his experiences of torture.

The US State Department said last month it was "tracking Ibrahim`s case closely and working with the government of Israel on this case."

Ibrahim`s case has drawn international attention as human rights groups highlight the treatment of prisoners in the detention system of a regime that is under scrutiny for violating international law and protections for prisoners.

Testimonies collected by Palestinian lawyers reveal that prisoners are subjected to systematic torture in Israeli facilities, including severe beatings, starvation, medical neglect, and other forms of brutal treatment.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners Society, at least 80 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody since October 2023.
