Fawzia Koofi: The Taliban Have Stripped Afghan Women of All Their Rights

Fawzia Koofi, former member of Afghanistan`s parliament, warned of a "silent tsunami" in her country during an interview with a Spanish newspaper, urging the world not to wait for another September 11 before taking action. She said the Taliban have deprived women of all their rights and freedoms and erased them entirely from public life.

Koofi expressed deep concern about the Taliban`s extremist indoctrination, saying that the regime is radicalizing Afghan society at an alarming rate.

She also criticized the international community`s neglect of Afghanistan, recalling the chaotic U.S. withdrawal, which she described as a "betrayal" of the Afghan people.

"Not only I, but all Afghans speak of America`s betrayal," she said. "Now, when we speak with American diplomats, Afghans ask: *Are these not the same people who abandoned us? Why are they interfering now?"

In her interview with La Vanguardia, Koofi stated that the United States no longer sees Afghanistan as a security priority, while Europe views Ukraine as its top concern.

She warned that Afghanistan is like a chronic tsunami-a slow-building crisis that could erupt into catastrophe-and stressed that the world must find a diplomatic solution before another 9/11 happens.

Koofi called on the international community to hold the Taliban accountable and to support opposition movements and women`s groups inside and outside Afghanistan.

Reflecting on the intra-Afghan peace talks, she added that even a weak peace agreement would have been better than the current situation. "If part of the population had been allowed to participate in the system," she said, "the Taliban would have been under pressure and forced to face real challenges."
