American and Russian top diplomats have held preliminary talks in Geneva over issues straining bilateral relations. Ahead of the meeting both sides were voicing pessimism. Russia says initial security talks with the US have been complex but businesslike. The US however remains pessimistic about any breakthroughs during these talks. Meanwhile, the tone from both sides remains aggressive.
