Afghanistan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani on Thursday said that he was concerned about transparency of parliamentary election scheduled to be held next year.

Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate death of former Afghan president and head of High Peace Council Burhanni Rabbani six years ago, his son Salahuddin Rabbani said that a all-encompassing, free and fair election would prevent crisis in the country.

Any election lacking transparency would cause problems and we are concerned in this regard, Rabbani, who also heads Jamiat-e-Islami party, said urging relevant institutions to be serious on ensuring a transparent and acceptable election.

The Independent Election Commission, Afghanistan’s top electoral body, has set the date for the parliamentary election for July 7, 2018.

The delayed vote would follow a presidential election in 2014 that was marred by allegations of mass fraud.

During the event at Loya Jirga, former Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, emphasized on unity of the people and reiterated call on the Taliban to join peace.

Abdul Rab Rasool Sayyaf, a former mujahideen leader, claimed presence of a Fifth Column in the government, saying it was biggest threat to the country’s stability.

The government should eliminate Fifth Column otherwise stability will not come, he said.

He also criticized immorality and corruption.

If Taliban is hurting Islam with violence and barbarity, we are hurting it with immorality and corruption, he said.

For his part, Mohammad Mohaqqiq, the deputy Chief Executive, said that ethnic discrimination was organized in the Office of Administrative Affairs. His comment came after a leaked memo from a member of the office suggested ethnic bias in appointments.
