The United Nations Human Rights Office (OCHA) has demanded that the US authorities investigate the shooting of a Minneapolis resident by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent that took place as part of President Donald Trump`s escalated crackdown on foreign migrants.

In a statement published on Tuesday, OCHA urged the officials to carry out a "prompt, independent, and transparent" investigation into the fatal shooting, saying that the intentional use of lethal force should only be allowed as a "measure of last resort."

Deployment of such force, the office said, had to take place "against an individual representing an imminent threat to life," spokesperson Jeremy Laurence stated, stressing the need for accountability in the case.

The comments came as protests have spread across the United States following the death of the 37-year-old mother, identified as Renee Good, by the ICE officer, named as Jonathan Ross.

Laurence added that all authorities had to "take measures to de-escalate tensions and refrain from incitement to violence."

Trump and his administration claim the shooting was a "defensive action," an allegation rejected by local authorities and eyewitnesses, who cite damning evidence visible in video footage of the incident.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has said any "self-defense argument" is "garbage" as Good posed no danger to any of the agents present at the scene of the incident.

Minneapolis and St. Paul, the state of Minnesota`s two largest cities, filed a lawsuit on Monday against the federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to end a "federal invasion" of their state.

The lawsuit seeks to stop the "unprecedented surge" of more than 2,000 federal agents deployed by DHS.

The filing also states that the administration has violated the 10th Amendment of the US Constitution by superseding Minnesota`s right to police itself.

The shooting happened on the second day of the immigration crackdown in the Twin Cities, which DHS said, is the largest immigration enforcement operation in the US.
