The Russian foreign minister says Ukraine attempted to attack President Vladimir Putin`s residence in the Novgorod region, warning that it will have implications for peace talks.

Sergei Lavrov said Ukraine targeted Putin`s state residence with 91 long-range drones on the night of December 28 to 29.

He also said all of the drones were destroyed by Russian air defense systems and that no damage or casualties resulted from the incident.

He said the "terrorist" strike came amid "intensive negotiations" between Moscow and Washington to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

Kiev`s "reckless actions" will not go unanswered, the top Russian diplomat warned. Moscow has already designated targets and the timing of its impending retaliatory strikes.

"We do not intend to withdraw from the negotiation process with the US. However, given the complete degeneration of the criminal Kiev regime, which has shifted to a policy of state terrorism, Russia`s negotiating position will be revised," Lavrov said.

Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko denounced the attack as an attempt meant to undermine the negotiation process.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denied the drone strike as a "lie" and a "complete fabrication".

The story is "intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine, including Kiev, as well as Russia`s own refusal to take necessary steps to end the war," he alleged in an X post.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin informed US President Donald Trump about the drone attack in a phone call earlier on Monday, and told him that Moscow is reviewing its position on peace talks as a result.

Trump was "shocked" and "outraged" by the report he received from Putin, Russian state radio reported.

During a meeting in Florida on December 28, Trump and Zelenskyy discussed a US-brokered 20-point plan on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Trump said Moscow and Kiev are "closer than ever" to peace despite lack of breakthrough on the issue of territory.

In February 2022, Russia launched what it called a special military operation in Ukraine in a bid to prevent NATO`s eastward expansion after warning that the US-led military alliance was following an "aggressive line" against Moscow.

The Western countries have been escalating the war through the supply of advanced weaponry to Kiev.
