Disagreements on the Taliban opposition front; Jamiat-e-Islami, of Afghanistan, quits ‘resistance council’

Jamiat-e-Islami, led by Salahuddin Rabbani, said on Wednesday it had withdrawn from the National Resistance Council for the Salvation of Afghanistan, a day after three major political movements announced what they described as a unified political voice.

In a statement, Jamiat-e-Islami criticised Tuesday`s online gathering - attended by dozens of prominent political figures - as another example of "seasonal, tactical and fragile coalitions," saying such alliances had repeatedly failed in the past.

The National Resistance Council was one of the three main groups behind Tuesday`s declaration of "alignment and shared voice." Formed in 2022, the council includes senior political figures such as Yunus Qanuni, Atta Mohammad Noor and Mohammad Ismail Khan.

Jamiat-e-Islami said the council had originally been created to serve as a core platform for political resistance aimed at restoring the rule of law and democratic governance. Instead, it said, the body had drifted toward "incoherent and unaligned coalition-building driven by unhealthy approaches," which it argued did not reflect national interests or the council`s founding principles.

The party said it would now pursue its political struggle "through more appropriate frameworks" aimed at ending Afghanistan`s current crisis.

Tuesday`s virtual meeting brought together representatives of the National Resistance Council, the National Assembly for Salvation and the National Movement for Peace and Justice. In a joint declaration, they called for a UN-backed political settlement, intra-Afghan negotiations, a new constitution, free elections and guaranteed participation of women and youth in any future political order.

The statement also urged lifting restrictions on women`s work and education, ending forced displacement and arbitrary arrests, halting opaque mining deals, and restoring freedom of expression. The groups endorsed the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2721 on Afghanistan.

The declaration was read out in Pashto, Farsi, Uzbeki and English.

Participants included Abdul Rashid Dostum, Atta Mohammad Noor, Yunus Qanuni, Mohammad Mohaqiq, Haneef Atmar, Omar Daudzai, Mohammad Alam Ezedyar and others.

Ahmad Massoud, leader of the National Resistance Front, and former mujahideen commander Ismail Khan joined only in the final minutes.

Taliban have not commented on the developments.
