A person was in custody after police said they responded to an "active aggressor" at Kentucky State University.

One person is dead and another is in critical condition after reports of a shooting at Kentucky State University, officials said Tuesday.

In a statement, the Frankfort Police Department said a person is in custody in connection with the gunfire. The person was not immediately identified.

Additional details about the victims or a possible motive were not immediately available.

On Tuesday afternoon, the department said it had responded to an incident involving an "active aggressor" at the university campus. The school was placed on lockdown and the local sheriff`s office and university police secured the campus, according to the statement.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear described the incident as a "reported shooting" and for prayers for those affected.

Kentucky State University is a historically Black college in Frankfort, the state capital, and has a student body of roughly 2,200, according to the school.
