Trump touts lower drug prices as GOP preps for 2026: ‘I AM THE AFFORDABILITY PRESIDENT’
President Trump on Saturday touted that drug prices have fallen under his administration, signaling that it will be a winning issue for Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections. "Because I have invoked FAVORED NATIONS STATUS FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, DRUG PRICES ARE FALLING AT LEVELS NEVER SEEN BEFORE, 500%, 600%, 700%, and more," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. The president, giving himself praise, told Republicans to remember that "this was done by us, and nobody else." "This is a revolution in medicine, the biggest and most important event, EVER," the president continued. "If this story is properly told, we should win the Midterm Elections in RECORD NUMBERS. I AM THE AFFORDABILITY PRESIDENT. TALK LOUDLY AND PROUDLY!" The Trump administration has made several deals with drug manufacturers aimed at lowering drug prices. The president made a deal with Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly to sell their GLP-1 weight loss drugs at discounted prices earlier this month. Last month, AstraZeneca pledged to keep the price of drugs to Medicaid patients at the same level as the lowest price charged in other countries. Trump said AstraZeneca would list most of its products on the TrumpRx.com website. The deal was made in agreement with the administration`s "most favored nation" (MFN) executive order issued in July. Pfizer was the first drug manufacturer to agree to the order in September. As voters express frustration over affordability and the cost of living, most support the perceived attempt by Trump to go head-on with Big Pharma. A recent survey commissioned by the Pharmaceutical Reform Alliance and conducted by National Research Inc., showed that 86 percent of Americans support Trump`s health agenda and said they would back candidates with MFN as part of their platform. The survey also found that 85 percent of voters believe prescription medications have gotten more expensive. About the same percentage of respondents said pharmaceutical companies carry most of the blame for the high costs. Affordability became a key issue during the 2025 elections and record-long government shutdown, as Democrats swept several critical elections. Trump rebuked the idea that rising costs could risk Republican seats in 2026, calling the suggestion a "con job by the Democrats." The president has also claimed the affordability issue is "dead," most recently using Thanksgiving meal prices as a way to suggest his efforts have brought prices down. "Walmart said yesterday that the Thanksgiving [dinner] was 25 percent more expensive under [former President Biden]." he told reporters "To me, that`s a big number because Wal-Mart`s respected."
