UN: Border Tensions Between Afghanistan and Pakistan Are Worsening the Humanitarian Crisis
Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has warned that the escalating border clashes between the Taliban and Pakistan are yielding no positive results and are instead intensifying the humanitarian crisis along the frontier between the two countries. AnsarPress: Grandi expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in a statement on Sunday posted on X (formerly Twitter), writing: "For decades, the Afghanistan-Pakistan border has witnessed conflict, forced displacement, and humanitarian crises." He added: "For the sake of those affected and for the stability of the region, we hope these tensions will come to an end as soon as possible." Grandi`s comments come amid a sharp escalation of border tensions between Kabul and Islamabad. The Taliban have accused Pakistan of carrying out airstrikes in Kabul and Paktika provinces, while Pakistani officials insist their operations targeted only terrorist groups and were not directed against Afghanistan itself. In retaliation, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban`s spokesperson, claimed that Taliban forces had seized 25 Pakistani border outposts and killed 58 Pakistani soldiers in counterattacks. The UN`s warning highlights growing international concern that continued military confrontations along the border could further destabilize the region and deepen the humanitarian suffering of civilians caught between the two sides.
