China has summoned the US ambassador to Beijing over Washington’s indictment of Chinese military officers who the United States says were involved in economic cyber-espionage. China’s Assistant Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang met US Ambassador to China Max Baucus on Monday after Washington charged five Chinese army officers with hacking into American nuclear, metal and solar companies “to steal trade secrets.” “The Chinese government and military and its associated personnel have never conducted or participated in the theft of trade secrets over the Internet,” Xinhua quoted Zheng as telling Baucus. He added that the allegations are totally baseless and will jeopardize relations between the United States and China. On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said Beijing itself was a victim of “severe US cyber theft.” “We once again strongly urge the US side to make a clear explanation of what it has done and immediately stop such kind of activities.” The report comes as recently senior Chinese officials warned the United States and its allies against stirring up troubles across the Asia-Pacific region. General Fang Fenghui, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, warned that the US effort to increase focus on the Asia-Pacific has stirred up disputes in the East and South China Seas. Fenghui made the remarks at the Pentagon on May 15 after meeting with US Army General Martin Dempsey.
