New India premier in New Delhi
New India premier in New Delhi

Thousands of supporters of India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have marked the party’s victory in the world’s biggest election.

The incoming prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, has arrived in the capital, New Delhi, and attended a parade marking the victory of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the election.

On Saturday, thousands of supporters of the 63-year-old premier gathered for his arrival in New Delhi from his home state of Gujarat.

“This victory has created a new confidence among people,” Modi told crowds of supporters. “Hundreds of thousands of BJP workers deserve credit for what we have achieved.”

He then drove to the BJP headquarters in the capital to discuss the formation of a new government for the country.

No exact date has been specified for the formation of his administration, but the new government will most likely be formed by next week.

Modi says his administration will work to create new jobs, focus on development, and show transparency in its policies.

On May 16, the opposition BJP won the first majority in the Indian parliament in 30 years, beating outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Congress party.

The BJP managed to secure more than the 272-seat majority required to create a government.

Singh and his cabinet are to submit their resignations to President Pranab Mukherjee later in the day.
