In the Italian capital, about 3,000 people attended an anti-government demonstration organized jointly by Italy’s three largest right-wing political formations, Matteo Salvini’s League, Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and Giorgia Meloni’s Brother of Italy.

Only a limited number of people were allowed by the Italian authorities to gather in People’s Square due to Covid-19 restrictions. The demonstration, that saw the participation from diverse sectors of society, was a protest against the government’s policies amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The so-called Relaunch Decree is worth 55 billion Euros and is meant to counter the disastrous impact of the pandemic on Italy’s economy. The national Bureau of statistics ISTAT has warned the Italian GDP will fall 8.3 per cent this year and investments will drop by over 12 per cent while more than half a million jobs have already been lost since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in February.

During her speech, far-right Brothers of Italy leader Giorgia Meloni, expressed the hope that Italians will send out a clear signal to the government after the summer, in the next round of regional and local elections.

On September 20, on a busy single ’Election Day’, Italy will hold voting in six regions and over 1000 municipalities alongside a constitutional referendum on cutting the number of lawmakers. That’s when right-leaning parties expect the government to be given the cold shoulder by the Italian voters.
