US Fails to Enforce Security Agreement: Senator

A number of members of Meshrano Jirga (the Upper House of Parliament) on Sunday raised concerns regarding the security situation and said the United States is not doing enough to bring stability in Afghanistan.

The senators said based on the security agreement signed between Kabul and Washington, the US has a responsibility to defend Afghanistan.

According to the senators, the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) between Kabul and Washington should be reviewed, because so far Afghanistan has not been stabilized in terms of security.

The senators said the US failed to implement the security agreement between Afghanistan and the US.

The security agreement between Afghanistan and US should be reviewed. If it is not to the benefit of Afghanistan, then it should be canceled. If it is to the benefit of Afghanistan and some sections have not been implemented by the US, then attention should be paid to those sections, senator Zalmai Zabuli said.

Some other senators said security and stability will not be maintained in Afghanistan unless the US puts pressure on Pakistan to tackle terrorism.

As long as Pakistan does not take a serious stance against the insurgent groups, security will not come in Afghanistan, senator Najiba Hussaini said.

Senate speaker Fazl Hadi Muslimyar meanwhile said based on the Kabul-Washington security agreement, the US has the responsibility to stabilize Afghanistan.

When Farah was on the verge of collapse, US and NATO commander (Nicholson) said that the Farah war is over water and the interference of Iran. When the situation is like this (the interference of neighboring countries) then what is your job (in defending Afghanistan), said Muslimyar.

The senators said insecurity is taking more lives everyday and that if serious measures are not taken, more problems will be created for the people around the country.

The National Unity Government and Washington signed the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) in 2014 in the hope of bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan. In addition to the BSA, Afghanistan also signed the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with NATO.
