Shooting of Former Afghan Member of Parliament in Iran; Fingers Pointed at the Taliban

The armed attack on Karamuddin Reza Zada, a former member of Afghanistan`s House of Representatives, in the city of Karaj, Iran, has prompted reactions from a number of political factions and figures and has heightened concerns about the security of former military personnel and officials residing in Iran.

According to AnsarPress, Karamuddin Reza Zada was targeted by gunfire from armed assailants riding a motorcycle at approximately 4:00 p.m. yesterday in the "Mohammadshahr" area of Karaj and was wounded.

Reports indicate that one bullet struck Mr. Reza Zada in his left arm, injuring him.

The former Afghan parliamentarian is currently hospitalized in Karaj, and his condition has been reported as stable and satisfactory.

Reza Zada previously represented Ghor province in central Afghanistan in the House of Representatives. He also served for a period as Deputy Governor of Ghor under the former Afghan government.

Following the Taliban`s return to power in Afghanistan, he left the country for Iran, where he currently resides.

"A Terrorist Act" and Accusations Against the Taliban

The Supreme Council of National Resistance for the Salvation of Afghanistan condemned the attack, describing it as a "violent and terrorist act."

The council stated that "this criminal act is contrary to all human, legal, and ethical principles and constitutes a serious threat to the security and peace of citizens."

It called on Iranian security institutions to "undertake necessary measures, through enhanced cooperation and effective preventive actions, to ensure and strengthen the security of citizens-particularly former military personnel and employees of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan residing in that country."

Atta Mohammad Noor, former governor of Balkh and a senior leader of Jamiat-e Islami Afghanistan, described the attack as a "crime."

Noor accused the Taliban of responsibility and urged the group to "abandon violence, criminality, assassination, and bloodshed."

He added: "Shedding the blood of innocent people brings neither power nor legitimacy. Continuing this path will only deepen the old wounds of this land. Unfortunately, you are never satiated with the blood of the innocent."

Noor further wrote: "Until today, in the interest of the nation and to prevent a repetition of past tragedies, we have chosen restraint and patience and have not permitted ourselves to enter into war. This statement comes from someone with decades of experience in battlefields and the ups and downs of wars of liberation-not from someone unfamiliar with war."

In the concluding part of his message, he stated: "Distance yourselves from the path of violence and do not push the country further toward confrontation and crisis. Afghanistan, more than ever, needs rationality, forbearance, and an end to bloodshed."

Background of Attacks on Former Afghan Military Figures in Iran

Karamuddin Reza Zada is the third prominent Afghan figure in recent months to be targeted in an armed attack in Iran.

In the month of Jadi of the current solar year, General Ekramuddin Sari, former police commander of Takhar, and Mohammad Amin Almas, a former Afghan military officer, were attacked and killed in Tehran.

Prior to that, a commander close to Mohammad Ismail Khan, one of Afghanistan`s prominent jihadist leaders, was assassinated in the city of Mashhad, Iran.

Iranian authorities have stated that they are investigating the assassinations of former Afghan military personnel in Tehran, but the results of those investigations have not yet been made public.

Following the Taliban`s return to power in Afghanistan, a significant number of former Afghan officials and military personnel sought refuge in Iran.

The recent attacks against prominent figures and former military officials have intensified concerns regarding their safety.
