Iran and Russia have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop cooperation in various fields of communications and information technology, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and smart government.

The document was inked by Iran`s Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Technology Meysam Abedi and Russia`s Deputy Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media Alexander Shoitov at the end of the fifth meeting of the two countries` joint working group in Moscow on Friday.

According to the agreement, Tehran and Moscow will boost cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, smart government, blockchain and fintech, regulations, and technology and postal services.

Speaking to reporters after the agreement was finalized, Abedi said Iran and Russia had reaffirmed their determination to expand state-level cooperation in communications and information technology.

He added that the two governments plan to strengthen collaboration in data transit, electronic governance, and the sharing of technical capacities and experience.

Abedi noted that Iran and Russia also agreed to enhance cooperation on developing AI-based tools, as both countries are pursuing research and practical projects in this field.

He expressed hope that the expanded partnership would help Tehran and Moscow produce higher-quality products and deliver improved services.

The Russian official praised the strong cooperation between the two sides and said ties between their governments and private companies in telecommunications and communications would continue to grow.

The document comes amid enhanced cooperation between Tehran and Moscow. In early October, Iran and Russia officially commenced the execution of a 20-year comprehensive strategic partnership treaty, marking a significant step towards strengthening their bilateral ties.

The treaty was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Moscow on January 17, 2025.

Under the treaty, both countries are dedicated to assisting one another in countering common security threats and engaging in intelligence sharing.

The agreement also specifies that should one party face aggression, the other will refrain from offering assistance to the aggressor. Despite facing heavy Western sanctions, Iran and Russia have deepened their relations across various domains as close strategic allies.
