The General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran has warned that the consequences of the European Union`s decision to designate the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization will directly affect European policymakers.

"The irrational, irresponsible and hateful action of the European Union has undoubtedly been taken in unquestioning obedience to the hegemonic and inhumane policies of the United States and the Zionist regime," it said in a statement on Thursday.

"And it reflects the depth of hostility and resentment of the leaders of this group towards the noble nation of Iran, the armed forces, and the security and independence of the powerful country of the Islamic Republic of Iran," it added.

The European Union added the IRGC to its terrorist list in response to Iran`s measures against rioters who violently wreaked havoc across the country on the invitation of a monarchist and the public incitement of US and Israeli leaders in late December.

Foreign-backed armed rioters and terrorists hijacked peaceful, sporadic protests over economic grievances on January 8 and 9 and turned them to scenes of murder, torching of mosques, clinics, ambulances and commuter buses and destroying public and private property.

Iranian authorities have confirmed that US and Israeli spy agencies were directly involved, providing funding, training, and media support to rioters and armed terrorists acting on the streets.

According to the Thursday statement, the designation is a baseless and irrational decision made under pressure from the "delusional" US President Donald Trump and the "terrorist and child-killing" Israeli regime, calling it a clear violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the fundamental principle of respect for national sovereignty.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces emphasized that the IRGC has always been a legitimate and powerful institution and has stood on the front lines of combating US state terrorism and the "dangerous" Israeli regime.

The IRGC has played a leading role in defending Iran and supporting nations affected by organized terrorist groups, backed by the United States, Israel, and destabilizing armies with the support of some European countries, it said.

The statement noted that thousands of IRGC members have been killed or wounded in this effort.

The statement also questioned how the European Union could, "with complete openness," accuse an anti-terrorism institution in order to please Trump and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who foster terrorism.

The statement noted that the accusation against the IRGC is aimed at supporting, expanding, and legitimizing terrorism in the region and globally.

Referring to the IRGC`s role in fighting groups such as Daesh and the Mujahedin Khalq Organization, which were supported by US and European leaders, the General Staff said these efforts are clear evidence of the IRGC`s role in ensuring regional peace and security.

Reaffirming its determination to confront terrorist groups, the General Staff warned that responsibility for the "dangerous consequences" of a hostile and provocative decision would rest directly with European policymakers.
