This occurred one day after a fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis.

U.S. Federal Border Patrol agents shot and wounded two people in Portland, Oregon, according to the city`s police force and the Department of Homeland Security. One person was shot in the leg, while the other was shot in the chest, The Oregonian reports, citing police sources.

Both are now in the hospital, but their conditions are unknown.

"Both individuals are alive, but we do not know the extent of their injuries," Rep. Maxine Dexter (D-Ore.) said in a statement.

Police responded to a report of a shooting around 2:18 pm local time on Wednesday afternoon and confirmed that federal agents were involved, Portland Police said. Officers provided medical care to a man and a woman at the scene who had apparent gunshot wounds. The victims were then transported to a hospital where they are being treated.

"We are still in the early stages of this incident," Portland Police Chief Bob Day said in a statement. "We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more."

In a post on X that appears to have been deleted, the FBI also noted that it was "investigating an agent involved shooting that happened at approximately 2:15pm near the 10000 block of Main St. in Portland involving Customs and Border Patrol Agents in which 2 individuals were wounded."

The Department of Homeland Security claimed in its statement about the shooting that a Border Patrol agent fired a "defensive shot" after the driver of a car "attempted to run over" law enforcement agents during a "targeted vehicle stop" on Thursday afternoon. DHS alleged, without providing evidence, that both people in the car were affiliated with the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and that one of the people was an undocumented immigrant.

A statement the FBI released later in the day appeared to echo DHS`s allegations and marked a major change in tone from its earlier post.

"FBI Portland is investigating an assault on a federal officers that happened at approximately 2:15pm near the 10000 block of Main St. in Portland involving two Customs and Border Patrol agents," the statement from the FBI Portland office said, per a CNN report.

A map shared by police showed that the patients were found nearly three miles from the site of the shooting, according to KATU News. DHS`s statement notes that the driver and passenger drove away from the area after they were fired upon.

The shooting occurred one day after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot Renee Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday, an incident that ignited significant outcry over the violence deployed by federal agents.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson urged ICE to end its operations in the city while an investigation was conducted into Thursday`s shooting.

"Just one day after the horrific violence in Minnesota at the hands of federal agents, our community here in Portland is now grappling with another deeply troubling incident. Earlier this afternoon, two people were shot and injured by federal agents in the Hazelwood neighborhood," Wilson said in a statement obtained by KATU News. "We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts. Portland is not a training ground for militarized agents, and the full force threatened by the administration has deadly consequences. As mayor, I call on ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation can be completed."
