BBC issues apology to Trump, disputes his defamation claim
The BBC has issued an apology to the White House over the way it edited a clip of President Trump speaking to his supporters on Jan. 6, 2021, before the attack on the Capitol. The apology came just days after Trump`s attorneys threatened to sue the British broadcaster for $1 billion over the clip, which was shown as part of a documentary on the network. "Lawyers for the BBC have written to President Trump`s legal team in response to a letter received on Sunday," a spokesperson for the outlet said in a statement Thursday to The Hill. "BBC Chair Samir Shah has separately sent a personal letter to the White House making clear to President Trump that he and the Corporation are sorry for the edit of the President`s speech on 6 January 2021, which featured in the programme," the statement continued. The BBC has no plans to rebroadcast the documentary "Trump: A Second Chance?" on any of its platforms, the outlet said. "While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim," the spokesperson added. Shah had already issued an apology in a letter to British lawmakers earlier in the week, saying "We accept that the way the speech was edited did give the impression of a direct call for violent action" and calling it an "error in judgement." The clip in question showed Trump telling supporters on Jan. 6, "We`re going to walk down to the Capitol, and I`ll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell." A more complete video and transcript of Trump`s remarks showed him telling his supporters to march "peacefully and patriotically" to the Capitol. Trump`s lawsuit accused the BBC of defamation saying the network subjected the president to "overwhelming financial and reputational harm" with the edit.
