Support for US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has declined sharply across the country, falling to the lowest on record since his poor performance in the Iowa primary election, according to a new poll.

In contrast, support is continuing to increase for US Senator Bernie Sanders among Democratic Party voters, while interest is also surging for billionaire media mogul and former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, according to the Reuters/Ipsos survey released on Monday.

The opinion poll taken from Thursday to Monday found that 17 percent of voters registered as Democrats and independents said they would vote for Biden, down 5 percentage points from a similar survey conducted last week.

That level of support was the lowest recorded for Biden by the Reuters/Ipsos poll since the former vice president entered the race last April.

Sanders was leading all other candidates in the poll with 20 percent support, up one point from last week, while 15 percent supported Bloomberg, an increase of 6 points.

Some 11 percent backed US Senator Elizabeth Warren, while 8 percent supported former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, 5 percent backed businessman Andrew Yang and 3 percent supported US Senator Amy Klobuchar.

There are now 11 Democratic candidates remaining in the party’s nomination race. The winner will challenge Republican President Donald Trump in this November’s presidential election.

The poll highlights Biden’s steady decline in support, who was considered until recently the favorite to win the party’s nomination.

Biden’s primary appeal to voters has been his argument that he is the most electable of all of the candidates. Yet he finished in fourth place in Iowa, behind Buttigieg, Sanders, and Warren.
