IEA condemns alleged airstrike by Pakistan on drug treatment hospital in Kabul
At least 400 people were killed and 250 others were wounded in Pakistan airstrike on a rehabilitation center in the east of Kabul on Monday night, Taliban deputy spokesman said, adding that casualties may rise. Hamdullah Fitrat said the strike targeted the 2,000-bed rehabilitation center in eastern Kabul at around 9 pm local time. He said many of the victims were patients receiving treatment at the facility and warned the death toll could rise. The attack came on the 19th night of escalating clashes between Pakistani forces and Taliban, which began on Feb. 26 along the countries` shared border. Taliban officials say Pakistani forces have carried out airstrikes and artillery attacks in several parts of Afghanistan in recent weeks, while Pakistan accuses the Taliban of allowing militants from the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to operate from Afgha`istan`s territory - an allegation the Taliban deny. Some residents of Kabul said their homes were damaged by the airstrikes. Videos sent by residents to Amu TV showed damaged houses in several neighborhoods near the strike sites. Pakistani officials have not immediately commented on the casualties` figures. The United Nations has previously warned that the fighting between Pakistan and Taliban has caused rising civilian casualties. UN figures show that 73 civilians were killed and 193 wounded during the first two weeks of the clashes.
