27 percent Increase in Security Incidents in Afghanistan; Over 2,600 Recorded in Three Months
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated in a new report that 2,660 security and safety-related incidents were recorded in Afghanistan between November 1, 2025, and January 31, 2026. According to AnsarPress, the UN Secretary-General noted in the report that this represents a 27.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year. He added that during this period, anti-Taliban fronts-including the Afghanistan Freedom Front and the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan-claimed responsibility for 36 attacks against Taliban forces, 14 of which were confirmed by the United Nations. The report states that these attacks occurred in the provinces of Badakhshan Province, Balkh Province, Faryab Province, Herat Province, Kunar Province, Kunduz Province, Kabul Province, Kandahar Province, Logar Province, and Panjshir Province, and included sporadic rocket attacks, grenade assaults, and shootings targeting Taliban checkpoints and convoys. The report also referred to an attack on a Chinese restaurant in Kabul for which Islamic State - Khorasan Province claimed responsibility, although no details about casualties were provided. The UN Secretary-General further stated that several security incidents occurred during this period along Afghanistan`s borders with Iran and Pakistan. He noted that on November 6, Taliban forces and Pakistani forces clashed, affecting civilian areas and infrastructure in Kandahar Province. The report also states that Taliban security forces and Iranian forces clashed along the border of Nimruz Province, resulting in the temporary closure of the border. Additionally, between November 9 and 11, Taliban and Pakistani forces exchanged fire with light weapons along the borders of Khost Province and Paktika Province. On December 4, Pakistani forces opened fire on individuals attempting to cross from Paktika into Pakistan, and on December 5, clashes occurred between Taliban and Pakistani forces at two border points in Kandahar Province. According to the report, between January 7 and 17, repeated clashes were reported along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in Kunar Province. On January 19 and 20, further clashes occurred along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in Maruf district of Kandahar Province. On January 31, while Pakistani forces were constructing a watchtower near the border barrier, they clashed with Taliban forces in Lalpur district of Nangarhar Province, exchanging fire with heavy weapons and mortars. The report also notes that on December 24, as well as January 18 and 29, Tajik border forces encountered individuals attempting to cross from Badakhshan Province into Tajikistan, resulting in civilian casualties. The UN Secretary-General also reported that between November 1 and January 31, several airstrikes and drone operations were recorded across Afghanistan. He added that local communities observed drone flights and surveillance over districts in the provinces of Ghazni Province, Kandahar Province, Khost Province, Maidan Wardak Province, Panjshir Province, and Paktika Province. According to the report, on November 4, a drone strike on a mosque in Nangarhar Province killed a senior commander of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.
The report further states that airstrikes were carried out on November 25 in the provinces of Khost Province, Kunar Province, and Paktika Province, as well as on December 3 and 14 in Ghazni Province. According to the report, on December 13, an explosive device detonated near a private residence in Kunar Province, killing three individuals suspected of membership in Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. On January 13, a drone strike in Goshta district of Nangarhar Province wounded several civilians. The UN Secretary-General also stated that between November 1, 2025, and January 31, 2026, the United Nations recorded 47 security incidents directly affecting its personnel, compared with 42 incidents during the same period last year. The Taliban have not yet responded to the UN Secretary-General`s new report. Since regaining control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have consistently claimed that they have established nationwide security. However, attacks by ISIS and other groups, as well as Pakistani air and rocket strikes linked to tensions with the Taliban, continue to claim the lives of Afghan civilians.
