The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said on Monday that it had received "credible reports" of civilian casualties following Pakistani airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan late Saturday night, reporting that at least 13 civilians were killed and seven others wounded.

According to UNAMA, Pakistani military forces carried out airstrikes between approximately 11:45 p.m. on Feb. 21 and 12:15 a.m. on Feb. 22 in the Behsud and Khogyani districts of Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan. Preliminary figures indicate that those killed and injured included women and children, the UN mission said.

The mission also reported additional strikes in Barmal and Urgun districts of Paktika province, also in the east. In Barmal`s Marghai area, an airstrike struck a madrassa and partially damaged a nearby mosque around 11:15 p.m, UNAMA said.

In Urgun`s Dahna area, another strike partially destroyed a vacant residential house about 15 minutes later. UNAMA said no civilian casualties had been confirmed in those two incidents.

The UN findings come amid sharply conflicting accounts from Taliban and Pakistani officials.

Taliban authorities have described the strikes as an attack on civilians and a violation of Afghanistan`s sovereignty, previously claiming that at least 18 civilians - including women and children - were killed in Behsud district alone. Taliban officials have warned that they will deliver a "calculated response at an appropriate time."

Pakistani officials have offered a different account, claiming the airstrikes targeted hideouts of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the ISKP. They have claimed that nearly 70 militants were killed in what they described as "precise and calculated" retaliatory operations in response to recent suicide and car bomb attacks inside Pakistan.

In its statement, UNAMA called on all parties to bring a lasting end to hostilities and to protect civilians. The mission reminded those involved of their obligations under international law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution to prevent civilian harm.

The cross-border strikes mark one of the most serious escalations in recent months between Islamabad and the Taliban, deepening tensions over Pakistan`s repeated accusations that militant groups operate from Afghanistan`s territory - an allegation the Taliban deny.
