The National Resistance Front on Thursday confirmed the death of Hasib Panjshiri, one of its prominent commanders fighting the Taliban, after a media outlet close to Taliban intelligence reported that he had been killed in an operation.

Ali Maisam Nazary, the NRF`s head of foreign relations, confirmed Panjshiri`s death in a Facebook post, describing him as a tireless fighter and offering condolences to the front`s members and the people.

Nazary did not provide details about when or where Panjshiri was killed or the circumstances surrounding his death.

Al-Mersaad, a media outlet close to Taliban intelligence, had earlier reported that Panjshiri was killed in an operation by Taliban special forces. The Taliban have not officially commented on his death, and details of the reported operation have not been independently verified.

Panjshiri, also known as Hasib Qowaye Markaz, was a prominent military commander in the NRF, the armed opposition front led by Ahmad Massoud. He previously served in special units of Afghanistan`s former National Directorate of Security before joining the armed resistance against the Taliban after their return to power in August 2021.

He emerged as one of the more visible NRF commanders operating inside Afghanistan. In May 2025, photographs circulated showing Panjshiri and another senior NRF commander, Khalid Amiri, in military uniforms and carrying weapons in a mountainous area. NRF officials said at the time that the images demonstrated the presence of their forces inside Afghanistan.

Panjshiri also released a video at the time saying he remained inside Afghanistan and would continue fighting Taliban rule.

The NRF was formed under Massoud`s leadership following the collapse of the former government in August 2021. Initially centered in Panjshir, the front has since claimed guerrilla-style attacks against Taliban forces in Panjshir and other provinces.

The Taliban have frequently dismissed claims of attacks by armed opposition fronts and maintain that they have established security across Afghanistan.
