A ship believed to belong to India sinks off the Yemeni port of Hudaydah in the Red Sea.

A vessel believed to belong to India has been hit and sunk near the Yemeni port of Hudaydah in the Red Sea.

Reports on Tuesday said that the Faize Noore Oliya, a ship identified as Indian by a news agency close to Yemen`s south-based opposition, sank earlier in the day after being attacked while sailing about 13 nautical miles south of Al Hudaydah.

The agency said that the ship had been attacked by an explosives-laden boat, without giving more details on who was responsible.

It said that Yemeni opposition forces stationed near the Bab al-Mandab Strait came to the rescue of the crew of the ship, saving all 14 people on board, including 13 Indian nationals and one Yemeni person.

It said the attack left no casualties and people were transferred to a safe location.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the reported strike.

However, it comes amid an ongoing Yemeni blockade on shipping related to Saudi Arabia, which the Ansarullah resistance movement says is a response to years of Saudi economic blockade on Yemen.

The blockade started on July 20 and has forced several ships, including oil tankers, to reroute to a much lengthier route around Africa or return to Saudi ports.

Yemen has justified the blockade on Saudi Arabia, saying Riyadh`s own blockade on Yemen has caused widespread economic problems for Yemeni people, including for more than 6,000 daily workers at Hudaydah who lost their jobs because of the blockade.

Yemen has also taken military actions against Saudi Arabia in recent weeks, targeting energy facilities in the kingdom in response to recent Saudi attacks on Hudaydah and other places in Yemen.
