Flood death toll in Afghanistan rises to 51
At least 51 people have been killed and 89 injured in flooding across Afghanistan over the past eight days, according to Taliban figures, as heavy rains continue to batter multiple provinces. In the past 24 hours alone, three people were killed and 16 others injured as floods swept through at least 18 provinces, the data shows. The latest flooding affected parts of Kabul, Panjshir, Paktika, Khost, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzgan, Herat, Farah, Badghis, Jawzjan, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Nangarhar and Laghman. The damage has been extensive. In the past day, 384 homes were completely destroyed and about 700 more partially damaged. Floodwaters also destroyed nearly 1,500 acres of farmland, along with orchards and other agricultural assets. More than 800 families were affected in the latest wave of flooding. Since the start of the floods and rains on March 26, at least 676 homes have been destroyed, 367 kilometers of roads damaged and nearly 4,000 acres of land affected, according to the figures. In total, more than 8,600 families have been impacted nationwide. Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to seasonal flooding, particularly in the spring, when heavy rainfall and snowmelt place additional strain on fragile infrastructure and agricultural land. The latest wave of floods has raised concerns about the exposure of rural communities, many of which depend on farming for their livelihoods.
