Just a few months after the last government shutdown, another partial one began on Saturday, Jan. 31, after lawmakers failed to pass a funding package by a Jan. 30 deadline.

It`s unclear how long the lapse in appropriations will last. But it`s unlikely to drag on as long as the last one, given momentum in recent days between Senate Democrats, Republicans and the White House.

The Senate passed a spending bill Friday evening that extends spending for the Department of Homeland Security - which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol - for two weeks while lawmakers negotiate over ICE reforms, and funds other government agencies through September.

DHS and ICE has been mired in controversy after the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. Democrats in recent days have demanded changes to immigration enforcement, risking a shutdown in the process.

The bill now moves to House of Representatives, which is in recess. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said that Monday likely is the "earliest" the chamber will vote.
