Afghan Man accused of supporting terrorist group arrested by US ICE in Waynesboro

An Afghan national was arrested in Virginia after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accused him of providing support to a terrorist group.

Jaan Shah Safi was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Waynesboro on Wednesday, Dec. 3.

According to a release from the DHS, Safi is accused of providing support to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria-Khorasan (ISIS-K).

"He also provided weapons to his father who is a commander of a militia group in Afghanistan," the release reads.

According to the DHS release, Safi entered the United States through Philadelphia on Sept. 8, 2021, as part of Operation Allies Welcome - a program that brought in 76,000 Afghans during the U.S.`s chaotic withdrawal from the country that was started by Trump and overseen by Biden.

The DHS said Safi applied for Temporary Protected Status (TSPS) but his application was terminated after Secretary Kristi Noem terminated TPS for Afghans.
