70 percent of US Latinos disapprove of Trump performance: Survey
Seven in 10 U.S. Latinos disapprove of President Trump`s handling of his presidency, according to new Pew Research Center data. A pair of national surveys, published by Pew on Monday, showed Trump`s approval declining among Latin American adults, with 70 percent disapproving of his job performance, including 55 percent who strongly disapprove. Only 27 percent approved of his handling of the office, with 18 percent strongly approving. His approval rating dropped from 30 percent in June, which fell from 36 percent near the start of his term, in February. Trump`s support among Latino voters improved in the 2024 election, nearly reaching parity with former Vice President Harris, who won 51 percent of the Hispanic vote, while Trump won 48 percent, according to Pew data. That marked a significant improvement from his 2020 performance, when former President Biden won 61 percent and Trump won 36 percent of Hispanic support. Trump also outperformed every other Republican presidential candidate in exit poll data since the 1980s. Latinos who voted for Trump in 2024 still largely backed the president in the latest survey, but their support has faltered. In the late September poll, 81 percent of Trump voters approved of the president`s handling of his office, which was down from 83 percent in June and 93 percent in February. Among Harris voters, Trump`s approval dropped from 4 percent in February, to less than 1 percent in June, to 0 percent in September. In the second of two surveys released Monday, Hispanics said for the first time in nearly two decades that their situation in this country has worsened, when asked to compare to one year ago. In the survey, conducted in early October, 68 percent said their situation has worsened, compared to 26 percent in 2021 and 39 percent in 2019, when Trump was last in office. Meanwhile, 22 percent said their situation has stayed about the same, and 9 percent say it`s gotten better. While there continued to be a divide among 2024 voter preferences, Trump voters were still more likely to say their situation is worse (31 percent) than better (28 percent) compared to one year ago. Forty percent said it`s about the same. The vast majority of Hispanics said the Trump administration`s policies harm them, at 78 percent, rather than help them, at 10 percent. Among Trump voters, however, 41 percent said the policies have been helpful, while 34 percent say they have been harmful. The findings came from two nationally representative, bilingual Pew Research Center surveys conducted Sept. 22-28 and Oct. 6-16. The September survey included 3,445 adults, including 629 Hispanics, with a margin of error of 1.9 percentage points for the full sample. The October survey included 8,046 adults, including 4,923 Hispanics, with a margin of error of 1.7 percentage points for the full sample.
