Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Friday said President Trump was "deeply worried about" the controversy surrounding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after House Democrats leaked emails from the case that mentioned the president by name.

"Well, he is in daily panic mode as we get closer to the moment these files and the fullest truth that we have available to us is going to be made public," Murphy told The Bulwark`s Sam Stein at The Texas Tribune Festival.

"He wouldn`t be acting this way if he wasn`t so deeply worried about what sits in those files. What we`ve already seen is immensely incriminating," the Connecticut Democrat continued. "Clearly, Donald Trump was at the center of a child sex ring."

Murphy called it "heartbreaking" that Trump could have been involved in "that kind of gross, craven immorality," adding that "it stands to reason that he wouldn`t be fighting so hard to spin against this story or bullying Republicans in the House if there wasn`t something especially and specifically incriminating in that information."

He suggested that the files could contain "the biggest scandal in presidential history" - one that could bring Trump down.

"Yes, I am sure that there are both Republicans and Democrats named in those files," Murphy told Stein. "There are powerful people on both sides of the aisle. But what Trump is all about is not really playing a game based on politics but playing a game based on wealth and influence. If you have wealth and influence, Donald Trump is going to protect you."

The lawmaker`s remarks came the same day Trump called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Epstein`s involvement with prominent Democrats and institutions in a post on Truth Social. He also blasted the Epstein case as "another Russia, Russia, Russia Scam," referring to the probe into Russia`s alleged interference in the 2016 election.

Bondi later tapped Jay Clayton, acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, to oversee the investigation.

"As with all matters, the Department will pursue this with urgency and integrity to deliver answers to the American people," the attorney general wrote on social platform X.

House Oversight Committee Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) echoed Murphy on Friday in an interview with CNN`s Elex Michelson, claiming Trump was "panicked."

"All of this points back to the White House and why is the president covering this up and why is he trying to deflect a real investigation from moving forward?" Garcia said.

The emails released by House Democrats on Wednesday appeared to show Epstein suggesting Trump "knew" about his relationship with underage girls. The White House rejected the claim, calling the emails "selectively leaked."

The GOP-led House Oversight Committee also released 20,000 pages of documents from the Epstein estate on Wednesday amid its own probe of the case.

Trump himself has denied being close to Epstein and has said he removed the disgraced financier from his Mar-a-Lago resort after he "stole" young women, including the late Virginia Giuffre, from the resort`s spa.

Four Republicans joined with Democrats to advance a discharge petition in the House that will force a vote on a bill requiring the Justice Department to release all of the Epstein files. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said he would speed up a vote to next week after the petition hit the 218-signature threshold.

Garcia signaled to CNN that there is a "strong" number of Republicans who back the vote and anticipated that it would be "difficult for the Senate" to not advance the bill.

"All of this could end today if Donald Trump just went back to his campaign promise and released these files," he continued.

"What`s really disturbing is he`s trying to deflect by cherry-picking this new investigation when we know very well that there have been hundreds of FBI agents that have worked to compile the Epstein files that currently sit at the Department of Justice," The California Democrat added, "He`s got to release those."

Despite pressure, Trump has written off the controversy as a "hoax" and pressured Republicans to ignore it.
