Marjorie Taylor Greene Pushes Back Against Trump Over Epstein Files: `Powerful People Should Not Be Protected`

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Friday pushed back against President Donald Trump for saying any Republican who supports the release of documents about Jeffrey Epstein, the late sex offender who once called him his "closest friend," is "stupid."

Greene responded in a "CBS Mornings" interview, noting her concern is for "the victims."

"These women have been waiting, some of them for decades," she said. "I talked to several victims that were raped by Jeffrey Epstein back in the `90s, and so this is information that has needed to come out for a very long time, and the American people have demanded it."

Greene was one of only four House Republicans to support a discharge petition from Democrats on the House Oversight Committee to force a vote on the release of documents on Epstein. Trump called those Republicans "very bad" earlier in the week.

During the Friday interview, Greene said "the American people deserve to see transparency from their government" and that "rich, powerful people should not be protected." She added that her stance is "a message" to all children, rape and human trafficking victims that the government supports them.

"CBS Mornings" anchor Tony Dokoupil asked why Trump is "so opposed" to transparency, noting that even The Wall Street Journal`s conservative editorial board said he looks like "he has something to hide."

Greene responded, "I`ve talked to many of the women, and the women themselves have said that Donald Trump did nothing wrong. And even their attorney said ... Trump was the only one that helped them. So I`ll be very honest with you, it`s something I don`t understand."

One of the victims, who voted for Trump, said his dismissal of the case is "beyond me."

Greene on Friday called the president`s position "a huge miscalculation," prompting Dokoupil to note his "absence of a compelling" reason to block the release of files has led people to "jump to conclusions" regarding his knowledge of or involvement in the crimes.

He then highlighted one of the newly released emails making headlines.

"It`s from Jeffrey Epstein in 2011, and he says, ‘The dog that hasn`t barked is Trump.`" Dokoupil said. "The email goes on from there. We don`t understand the context. What do you make of this?"

Greene said that we unfortunately can`t ask Epstein, as he died in his prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

Dokoupil then asked if Greene believes Trump does have "something to hide." Greene reiterated her belief in the victims she spoke with, who said Trump didn`t abuse them.

"Even Virginia Giuffre said it under oath, and she wrote it in her book," Greene said. "And so if we listen to the women, they say Donald Trump has done nothing wrong."

Giuffre, a vocal Epstein accuser, died earlier this year of an apparent suicide. Epstein`s convicted accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, has since been moved to a cushy prison after echoing the notion of Trump`s innocence.

Giuffre`s family urged Trump in July not to pardon Maxwell, who has openly been angling for immunity, asking if he`s aware of her crimes with Epstein - "especially given his statement ... that his good friend Jeffrey `likes women on the younger side ... no doubt about it."
