UNAMA: Women`s Participation in All Sectors Is Crucial for Afghanistan`s Global Legitimacy

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has emphasized that the meaningful participation of women in all areas of public life-including political dialogue and humanitarian response-is essential for Afghanistan`s stability, prosperity, and legitimacy on the world stage.

According to AnsarPress, UNAMA issued a statement on the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, calling on the Taliban to uphold Afghanistan`s international legal commitments and to restore women`s full participation in public, political, and economic sectors.

Georgette Gagnon, UNAMA`s Deputy Special Representative and head of political affairs, stated:

"In Afghanistan, the principles of Resolution 1325 are more relevant than ever. Afghan women have long demonstrated extraordinary resilience, leadership, and courage in the face of immense adversity."

She added:

"Afghan women continue to bear the brunt of conflict, deprivation, and the erosion of their fundamental rights."

Gagnon further emphasized that despite these challenges, millions of Afghan women remain active:

"They continue to provide for their families, lead their communities, deliver humanitarian assistance, educate children, and mediate local disputes-keeping hope alive for a better future within their families, communities, and their nation."

Since returning to power, the Taliban have imposed sweeping restrictions on women`s presence and participation in public life.

The group has banned education for girls beyond sixth grade, prohibited women from most forms of employment, and even barred them from working in humanitarian operations or studying in medical fields.

UNAMA`s statement underscores that excluding women undermines not only human rights but also Afghanistan`s prospects for peace, development, and international recognition, urging the de facto authorities to reopen the space for women`s leadership and participation across all sectors of society.
