Bennett welcomes Taliban-Pakistan ceasefire

UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between the Taliban and Pakistan, calling it a vital step toward easing tensions after deadly cross-border clashes in recent weeks.

In a post on X, Bennett expressed condolences to the families of civilians killed or injured during the hostilities. "Their safety must be paramount. International law is not optional," he wrote.

The UN expert also praised the diplomatic efforts that led to the agreement, specifically acknowledging Qatar`s mediation role in facilitating talks between the Taliban and Pakistani officials in Doha.

The ceasefire, reached over the weekend, followed days of violence along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, including reported airstrikes by Pakistan and retaliatory shelling. Dozens of civilians were reportedly killed, with the UN confirming at least 37 deaths and more than 400 injuries.

The ceasefire agreement includes pledges by both sides to avoid further military actions and to form technical committees to oversee implementation. A second round of talks is expected to be held in Istanbul later this month.
