More National Guard troops due in Ferguson
More National Guard troops are set to be sent into the riot-hit US town of Ferguson following a grand jury decision to let a white cop walk free after he murdered a black teen.
As emotions were running high across the country, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said at a press conference on Tuesday that 1, 500 National Guard troops would be added to the 700 already in Ferguson to confront protests over the grand jury’s decision not to charge police officer Darren Wilson who shot dead back teenager Michael Brown on August 9.
Nixon’s remarks came as people hit the streets for a second day of protests against the decision.
Some protesters overturned barricades and swarmed the steps of the St. Louis federal courthouse.
Meanwhile, smoke continued to billow from properties set on fire overnight.
Late on Monday, protests were held in at least 90 cities and towns across the United States after St. Louis County prosecutor Robert McCulloch said that Wilson would not be indicted and that he would not even face charges for killing the 18-year-old.
“The violence we saw in areas of Ferguson last night is unacceptable,” Nixon said. “I am deeply saddened for the people of Ferguson who woke up to see parts of their community in ruins. No one should have to live like this, no one deserves this. We must do better and we will. According to reports, the first day of protests in Ferguson left at least 12 buildings burned while more than 80 protesters were arrested there. During a press briefing on Monday night, President Barack Obama urged protesters to be calm and said these protests are “an understandable reaction.” He also acknowledged that the US is suffering from racial discrimination.
