The Pakistani army chief of staff Gen. Raheel Sharif arrived in Afghanistan on Thursday to meet with the Afghan officials.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said Gen. Raheel Sharif is visiting Afghanistan on a formal invitation by the Afghan army chief of staff.

Gen. Zahir Azimi, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the meeting between the two top army officials begun on Thursday.

Gen. Sharif is also expected to meet with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah during his visit to Kabul.

This is the second senior Pakistani official visiting Pakistran following the formation of the new Afghan unity government.

Earlier Pakistan’s national security adviser Sartaj Aziz visited Kabul to meet with the new Afghan leadership in a bid to improve ties between the two nations.

The visit by Gen. Sharif to Kabul comes as the US Department of Defense accused Pakistan in its latest report for using militant groups as ‘proxy forces’ to carry out attacks in Afghanistan.
