A three-year legal battle between the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign and the British government came to a close yesterday. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the campaign; a move that rights groups called a historic victory. But what was the case about?

Westminster has lost a high profile court case. The government will no longer be allowed to impose its political opinions on Local Government Pension Schemes and how members manage their money. In 2016 local councils were banned from being able to divest their pension funds from British defense industries and companies complicit in Israel�s occupation of Palestine. The Palestinian Solidarity Campaign challenged those restrictions in 2017 and then took the case to Supreme Court when the Court of Appeal overturned a judicial review that found the ban unlawful. Now after a three year fight the PSC has won. Professor Kamel Hawwash, the Chair of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said:

This historic victory represents a major win not just for the campaign for Palestinian rights, but also for the fundamental principles of democracy, freedom of expression and justice.

In Britain anti-Israel sentiments are growing year after year. Israel hasn�t managed to prevent footage of the death and deprivation in Gaza reaching the global community, and people are speaking out.

According to the Campaign Against the Arms Trade the British government has licensed £374 million in arms sales to the Israeli government since May 2015. Many Britons say they don�t want blood on their hands and certainly don�t want to invest in the arms trade and oppression. According to the United Nations Israeli forces use live fire against civilians killing hundreds and sometimes thousands of Palestinians, including children, members of the press and first response teams, every year.

This come at a time when Israel continues to ramp up its oppression of the Palestinian people and pushes ahead with illegal acts such as annexing large swathes of the illegally occupied West Bank. War on Want says the UK government must hold Israel to account by imposing sanctions, as it has done in many other cases.
