Trump undermining US leadership role, Democrats attack Trump for his Mexico deal
US President Donald Trump is undermining “America’s preeminent leadership role” in part by forcing Mexico to make a new deal on immigration with Washington, says House Democratic leader, joining other Trump critics to condemn his latest agreement. “President Trump undermined America’s preeminent leadership role in the world by recklessly threatening to impose tariffs on our close friend and neighbor to the south,” said Nancy Pelosi in reaction to Trump tariff threats against the US neighboring country. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, for his part, noted that Trump has to stop talking about illegal immigration now that he has clinched the deal.
A former WTO chief compares Trump-imposed migration deal on Mexico with hostage-taking.
“Now that that problem is solved, I’m sure we won’t be hearing any more about it in the future,” said Schumer, who had predicted that the US president would continue his threats. Washington and Mexico City reached an accord to avoid a tariff war on Friday after Mexico agreed to expand a controversial asylum program and dispatch its security forces to contain the flow of illegal immigration from Central America.
US President Donald Trump says he would likely impose new tariffs on imports from Mexico to pressure it to crack down on rising numbers of migrants entering the US.
The concessions by Mexico City came after Trump threatened to levy increasing import tariffs of five percent on all Mexican goods on Monday if the administration of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador did not take measures to tighten its borders. According to US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, the deal would “fix the immigration issue.”
